Customer Feedback: 3M Wig Tape vs. Hollywood Fashion Tape

Every once in while, we get a number of identical comments from various customers about a particular product. Recently, we've experienced this with our wig and hairpiece tape, manufacturered by 3M.

Many customers have told us they use our wig and hairpiece tape as fashion tape, to hold clothing and accessories firmly to the body. Being clear and double-sided, this tape is perfect for this use. It works very well securing clothing to prevent any unnecessary movement or embarrassing situations!

We've even had customers tell us that our 3M tape works better than the popular Hollywood Fashion Tape brand. They've mentioned that this tape holds stronger, holds longer, and is more resistant to moisture.

How To Avoid Damaging Your Synthetic Wig or Hairpiece

Your wig is an investment and will last a long time with proper care and maintenance. But many customers continue to damage their wigs and hairpieces making some very common mistakes. So what should you NOT do, to prevent damage to your investment?

1. Do Not Wash In Hot Water

Synthetic wigs are styled during the manufacturing process by exposing select hair fibers to high temperatures, bending into a specific shape, then cooling the hair in that shape. This causes the fiber to keep the specific shape. Hair fibers of various lengths, shapes, and colors are then used when assembling each wig.

Exposing your synthetic wig to high heat will cause the synthetic hair fiber to lose its "memory" and return to its original, straight shape. Exposing the hair fiber to extremely high heat can cause the synthetic hair fiber to actually melt! Wigs with this level of damage usually cannot be repaired.

2. Do Not Expose To High Temperatures

The household oven door has damaged more wigs than we can count! It's important not to expose wigs to heat over 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Since most cooking is done at temperatures higher than 140degF, be very careful when cooking while wearing your wig. It takes just a second to damage a wig with hot 350degF air from an oven! Also be careful with stovetop cooking, since steam can easily reach 140 degress or more. Some customers simply wear a soft comfortable cap, instead of their wig, when cooking.

3. Do Not Use a Hair Dryer or Curling Iron

Can you guess why? Yep, its about keeping heat away from your wig. Synthetic wigs are not made to be styled using heat. The synthetic hair fiber simply cannnot survive being exposed to temperatures over 140 degrees.

How to Care for your Synthetic Wig or Hairpiece - Washing

At Jean's Boutique and Wigs, your support from us doesn't end at the time of your wig purchase. We want to ensure that you are happy with your wig. And that your wig keeps its beautiful shine, color, and body.

That's why we're posting a series of posts specifically focusing on wig care and maintenance. Follow these tips to help your wig keep its original glow.

Today's tip is about washing your synthetic wig or hairpiece. Your wig is an investment. Proper care will extend the life of your investment.
.
Washing
Before washing, brush your wig thoroughly to loosen dirt and comb out any tangles. Place a few drops of wig shampoo into a basin and fill with lukewarm water. Swish wash the wig gently, making sure the wig gets completely soaked with the shampoo mixture. Do not rub the wig.
.
Gently rinse the wig in cool water to completely remove shampoo. Apply a wig conditioner product at this point, if needed. Then rinse completely with clean lukewarm water.
.
Never wash a wig in hot water. Very hot water will cause synthetic wigs to loose their style, due to the high heat reacting with the synthetic fiber.

Drying
Wrap your wig and blot in a clean towel to remove excess water if necessary. Finally, drape your wig over a wire stand or hook and allow the wig to completely drip dry. Do not brush or comb the wig while wet.

Style
After the wig has completely dried, shake the wig and brush back into the desired style. Synthetic wigs will bounce back into their original shape, due to their preset curl.

Charity Highlight - National Ovarian Cancer Coalition

One of the many charities we support is the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. We became familiar with this organization when a customer of our lost her fight to this deadly disease. Many times referred to as an agressive cancer, ovarian cancer can quietly sneak up on the patient, with symptoms appearing only when the disease has reached a advanced stage.

Shortly after our customer lost her battle, her daughter Andrea became actively involved in the local Eastern Michigan Chapter of the NOCC. Andrea frequently stops in at our retail store to drop off handouts and other awareness materials from the NOCC. We have a small basket of patient information for our customers.

This information helped the spouse of my husband's colleage at his work location. This coworker's wife was diagnosed with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer. Doctors were skeptical that treatment would stop the cancer, but agree to perform surgery to remove a tumor. After surgical treatment and post-surgical chemotherapy, his wife's cancer has now been put into remission.

One item that has been selling well is the "Cooking for a Cure" charity cookbook from the Eastern Michigan Chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. This cookbook has a nice selection of recipies, everything from salads and soups to entrees and deserts. You can find a listing to the Cooking for a Cure charity cookbook in our eBay store, complete with page photos of the cookbook index and a sample recipie page.
